National Extraction-based CO2 Emissions

This is a draft release of annual national emissions accounts based on extracted fossil fuels and carbonates: emissions from oxidation of the fuels (or venting of fossil CO2) and decomposition of the carbonates (only in cement so far) are allocated to the country that extracted them regardless of where in the world oxidation / venting / decomposition occurs. These can be seen as a complement to territorial and consumption-based emissions (as well as emissions aligned with National Accounts).

Estimates are derived from energy data published by the Energy Institute, Mohr et al. (2014), UN Statistics Division, JODI, and the Global Carbon Budget (for both flaring/venting and cement). Where available, national emissions are reported from 1850, while the per capita series starts in 1950. These start years may be pushed back to earlier periods in future releases. The final year of data is 2025.

As a draft release, there are some issues with the estimates. For example, in some years the global total is less than the sum of the individual countries reported. Further, while the global totals are in general very close to the territorial emissions estimates in GCP's fossil CO2 dataset, there are some divergences. These things will be worked on as time permits.
